Barbarian

Introduction

The Barbarian is a melee-oriented class witth great physical powers, and uses fury instead of mana as a resource pool. It is confirmed that the male Barbarian is the same Barbarian featured in Diablo II. He is depicted as an aging man with a white beard and graying locks, but he still possesses his trademark muscular structure.

Skills

Renowned for their awesome combat prowess as well as their arrogant demeanor, the Barbarians appear to be perpetually girt for battle. Through harsh conditioning, the Barbarians excel in physical combat and tremendous feats of strength. They derive their power chiefly from intense physical training, but also tap primal energies from the living world around them. They can manifest these or add to their already considerable catalogue of superhuman feats of strength and power. The barbarians call this power Fury.

The barbarian skills are arranged into to three distinctive skill tree categories: Berserker, Battlemaster and Juggernaut.

All three trees have a combination of active and passive skills. Active skills are used in combat, while the passive skills boost or change the behaviour of the active skills.

Background

Lead by Bul-Kathos, the tribes called "barbarians" by the people of the Western Kingdoms united in for a sacred charge, to protect Mount Arreat and its mystical secrets. They call themselves the Children of Bul-Kathos, and have seen their culture collapse after the destruction of the Worldstone and Mt. Arreat.

The Children of Bul-Kathos have developed a kinship with the land and have learned to harness the primal energies in nature to enhance their own substantial physical prowess, simply called "fury".

A number of Barbarians started roving the lands outside the Steppes, prepared for war and seeking information regarding the activities of the Prime Evils before the conflict that ended with the destruction of the Worldstone and Mount arreat.

In his personal history the Barbarian defeated Baal, only to learn from Tyrael that the Worldstone was corrupted and would have to be destroyed. The destruction of the Worldstone blasted Mount Arreat to rubble, destroying the remainder of Baal's army and saving the Barbarian lands from their invasion.

Twenty years later, when Diablo III takes place, the Barbarian lands are largely deserted, and the only remains of Mt. Arreat, formerly the symbol of the lands and the source of the Barbarians' spiritual strength, is a huge crater.

More than the physical damage, the events detailed in Act Five of Diablo II devastated the Barbarian culture. The Barbarians gained their identity and cultural pride from protecting the Worldstone within Mount Arreat. To see it defiled by Baal and his minions, and then destroyed, tore out the heart of these proud people. They abandoned their homeland and became nomadic, wandering the lands of Sanctuary and pitching themselves into battle after battle in an effort to forget the pain of their shattered homeland.

Abd al-Hazir visited the Barbarian lands and wrote about his experiences and observation in the 25th entry of his writings. It sets the stage for the story we'll learn when playing the game.

Lore

In my journey to catalogue the various denizens, civilizations, and fauna of our world, I have traveled far and wide, but never before have I been struck with such dismay as when standing upon the ramparts of the ancient fortress of Bastion's Keep. I came to see firsthand the barbarians, those near-legendary, immense, relentless, dual-wielding furies of combat dwelling upon their sacred Mount Arreat.

Instead, I stand here looking at a mountain that has been torn asunder by some extraordinary force. The sight, I must confess, is incomprehensible. Yet what I see before me cannot be denied.

What truly happened here? Where are those majestic warriors of old?

Though they were once misunderstood as simple, bloodthirsty invaders, the long and noble history of these proud people is now rightly acknowledged. And therein lies the greater tragedy here, for those of us familiar with the nobility of the barbarians remember too what they call their "vigil", the concept that lay at the very heart of their culture. The barbarians consider it their sworn duty to protect Mount Arreat and the mysterious object within. They believe that if they fail to uphold their duty to the great mount, or are not given a proper burial upon its slopes, they will be denied a true warrior's death, and their spirits shall roam the land without honor for all eternity.

If there are any barbarians left alive, they must truly be without hope. Perhaps this is the genesis of the rumors of monstrous things reported to resemble the barbarians in size and ferocity, but that are in reality nothing more than unreasoning, inhuman beasts. Could the destruction of not only their home but also their very beliefs have actually brought this magnificent race so low?

Since you'll be able to create different characters, why not just try the ones you don't like?

GTXInsane Icon

Well, a very succesfull class leads to remakes, look at Siege Tanks.

Anyways, I bet the skill trees wouldn't be THAT linear, a mix of juggernaut/zerk would probably do very well. You might be sacrificing some of your skills, but half of the skill tree of the zerk doesn't look that appealing to me.

Gotta agree that the barbarian is indeed a trademark, but they could make him much better than this. However, there is more to play than discuss. We'll see.

Logue Icon

Ah, but the barbarian's iconic, don't you see? The rest aren't so important.

Anön Icon

Posted Nov 23 2009
What about Assassin, Amazon, Necromancer, Paladin and others??

Mizkipz Icon

Posted Nov 23 2009
A warrior well versed in the art of sword might not be new but can be thrilling, I was a little unsatisfied with the unpopularity of swords in D2, just an idea though.

However, the Barbarian taking part in the new crusade is connected with the storyline.

Anön Icon

Posted Nov 23 2009
Agreed, Barbarian is getting old. Why didn't they replaced it like Bladesman or some shit like that.

Mizkipz Icon

Posted Nov 22 2009
What I don't like about the new skill set is that, you are forced to focus on just one, unlike the past where Warcry and Combat Skills can be leveled up without sacrificing much for the other, along with some points on the passives.

I'd say we need some change for the Barbarian, but I find a little bit boring.

Ha, an attacker.
Well, all I can say is: Different people have different preferences, some support, tank, damage.. Stuff like that. So, yeah :D

And yes, attack > tanking.

Anön Icon

Posted Nov 21 2009
I would prefer Berserker over any tier since in Diablo 3, you don't need to tank.. You need to clear massive shitstorm and spam pots like hell. Pew Pew! LOL.

Lunera Icon

Posted Nov 20 2009
If someone had everything needed it wouldn't be fun to play him, because all you do is.. Well, everything!
One imba attack, lacks defence. Makes sense, amirite?

Quote

lacks the least

Doesn't make sense. Just lacks?

GTXInsane Icon

Juggernaut = melee DPS tank, i find this one the most boring.
Battlemaster = support tank, lacks the least DPS [IMO] would be great in multiplayer though.
Berserker=since i'm a berserker in estiah currently, i'll probably use this one. IMO the highest DPS tier of the three, and just kick ass all around. Would probably need a shitload of pots though since the previous had either hp regen mods or high defenses.

I love the buffs of Battlemaster Tier but it has too many passive skills and lacks offensive tanking skills. If there's a skill where he can convert the damage into health that would make Battlemaster Tier a great tank.

Lunera Icon

Posted Nov 17 2009
New skills are where all the fun comes in, is it not?

Anön Icon

Posted Nov 17 2009
Barbarian skills looks the same for me just a little improvements. I noticed, they removed Leap :( Only leap attack remained

Lunera Icon

Posted Nov 15 2009
Lol massive shitstorm.
I wanna try all classes of the Barb's at the same time, when I play it. He just seems so.. Cool.

Anön Icon

Posted Nov 15 2009
Juggernaut is good for tanking and group kill; the same goes for Battlemaster but it lacks AoE skill. Berserker is prolly the best when clearing massive shitstorm especially with the Whirlwind skill. First post ftw!
